Initial Questions
The relationship to the natural world is a strong connection to nature or an emotional attachment to the environment surrounding you. Me personally i don't go out to take photos of nature to be fair i find it quite boring but i do think that the photos itself looks charming. People take photos of nature so they can tell a story when words cant convey it enough. images can captivate our imagination and evoke emotions.
The idea of a landscape
The photographers composition that they have chosen to include is the person on the horse with a blue cloudy mist. They might’ve excluded something like a desert so it doesn't fit with the image because its just dust. The relationship the photographer might’ve had with the landscape depicted could be something insignificant as he didn’t even bother to give the image a title as he called it the 'untitled'. The vantage point is quite central. i believe we are far from the image as theres no shadow and cloud of dust so it suggests that he zoomed in. The photo has some colour which shows it to be amusing rather than boring because of how abstract it looks. i believe that it looks fake or even staged as i think it looks edited.
The valley of the shadow of death: Roger Fenton, 1855
The photographers composition that they have decided to include is the shallow valley which looks sort of like a ditch. They might’ve excluded some grassy areas, people, or areas that look lively to cut out anything that represents life. The relationship the photographer had with the landscape depicted could be somewhere important to them but has withered away with time. The vantage point from which we are looking at is straight but also quite low. I believe we are close to the image as it doesn’t look like he needed to zoom in on it because its taken on film in 1855. The photo is monochromatic which makes us feel quite bored as the image isn’t exciting because it has nothing other than rocks and dust. The mood this photo gives us is mysterious and ominous which makes us think theres more to it.
Back to future
The first landscape is a picture of the ocean which looks like its been taken from an island made by Gustave Le Gray where he has used a glass negative to make 'the great wave' whereas the second landscape is a constructed collage made out of colour negatives by Dafna Talmor. These images are similar as there both landscapes that have been made to make these photos and they both seem to be images of a sea. The differences are the mood they bring out as the first image is unemotional, eerie and cold possibly because of its melancholic charm but its also quaint, the second image is eye-catching and melodramatic but depressing because of how its layered. i wouldn't prefer to live in any of these but the second seems more mesmerising but it doesn't seem as liveable as the first one since it looks more authentic.
Minimalist landscape
In the first landscape image there is a tree with holes in it with a black background but it seems like the top of the tree is cut off from the image. The second landscape looks like a leave and on the bottom right it sort of looks like a bucket but it doesn’t seem like anything important has been cut off. i find the first image quite unusual as there is an outline around it with a very strong background colour and the second image is unusual as the lines don’t connect so both these images look quite childish. The first landscape looks morbid so it gives off a sorrowful and melancholy mood. The second landscape looks a little bit immature as it seems unfinished but i believe that is the style of it but it wouldn’t be my approach. Both artists cut off parts of there images so they can change the dynamic and feeling of the image. Personally i prefer none of these images but the first landscape with a few altercations could look quite nice so i guess id have to choose that one.
